Adolf Luther – Experiments between Movement, Light and Matter

Collection in Motion in the Kunstmuseen Krefeld

Kaiser Wilhelm Museum | since October 2026

On October 15, the exhibition Adolf Luther—Experiments Between Movement, Light, and Matter, curated by PD Dr. habil. Luca Viglialoro, opened in the Luther Room of the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum.

The exhibition invites visitors to discover a lesser-known side of Adolf Luther while also taking a fresh look at the origins of his central artistic theme: light. From the Linear Structures and Moon Paintings of the 1950s, through the Matter Paintings, to the Dematerialisations and Light Sluices, visitors can trace how Luther increasingly expanded the possibilities of the traditional image in order to engage, step by step, with light. At the same time, Luther’s early paintings enter into a dialogue with various positions within European Informel art, such as the gestural visual language of Hans Hartung.

This marks a continuation of the collaboration between the Adolf-Luther-Stiftung and the Kunstmuseen Krefeld.
